Not a whole lot more explanation needed here. This, from Reddit, is a map of the world that shows which each country calls soccer.
Football is the most common name for the world’s most popular sport. But soccer isn’t as uncommon as you might expect, with at least one country in five of the six inhabited continents using a variation on the name.
Italy, meanwhile, calls the sport calcio. That name is derived from a 16th century rugby-like game that was played on sand and was very brutal. Henry III of France is alleged to have said the game was “too small to be a real war and too cruel to be a game.” (The niche sport is still played to this day.)
Anyway, enough of that. Here’s your map. Click it to make it bigger.
